The Testo 760-2 is the True RMS step up from the 760-1, adding TRMS measurement, a wider current range, a low-pass filter and an included Type K thermocouple adapter. True RMS means the meter measures AC voltage and current accurately even when the waveform isn't a clean sine wave, which matters for circuits powered by inverters, variable speed drives, switching power supplies and similar equipment found in modern HVAC and heating systems.
It adds a μA current range down to 0.1μA, useful for checking low-current circuits such as gas valve coils and flame sensing, and the included Type K thermocouple adapter turns the meter into a combined electrical and temperature tester, measuring -20°C to +500°C. Resistance, frequency and capacitance ranges are all extended over the 760-1: resistance to 60MΩ, frequency to 60MHz, and capacitance to 60mF (60,000μF).
Like the 760-1, it uses automatic parameter detection and illuminated function keys instead of a rotary dial, so incorrect settings aren't possible — the meter configures itself based on which sockets are engaged, and shows an error rather than a false reading if the wrong parameter is attempted. It's rated CAT IV 600V, higher than the 760-1's CAT III 600V rating, and displays on a 6,000 count backlit screen, versus 4,000 counts on the 760-1.
TRMS accuracy matters as soon as a circuit involves anything other than a clean sine wave — inverter drives, VFDs and switching power supplies are increasingly common in HVAC and heating systems, and a non-TRMS meter can give a misleading reading on these. The μA current range adds genuine diagnostic capability for gas valve coil and flame sensing circuits, and having a Type K thermocouple adapter included means temperature checks don't need a separate instrument. Extended resistance, frequency and capacitance ranges over the 760-1 give more headroom for a wider range of diagnostic tasks.
