Caledonian Controls ECS10/E Current Sensor – Fan Motor Monitor for BS 6173 Gas Interlock
In order to comply with BS 6173, the ECS10/E provides an alternative to a pressure differential switch for detecting the presence of the fan motor. Instead, it monitors the current drawn by the fan motor to confirm its operational status. This device represents a "non-indicating" version of the Caledonian Controls ECS10. Unlike the ECS10, the ECS10/E does not show the actual measured current level on an LCD screen. The device will instead utilize a simple green/red LED to provide an indicator of whether sufficient current is being drawn from the fan motor (green LED indicating the fan is operating properly) or if insufficient current is being drawn (red LED indicates the fan is either stopped, failed or that there is a problem with its drive belt). When the monitored current falls below the predetermined threshold, the LED light will change from green to red and trigger the gas interlock panel to shut off the gas solenoid valve.
As opposed to traditional current sensing devices such as current switches, the ECS10/E performs a test each time power is applied to ensure proper function using the Safe Start Check method. In addition to simply determining if the fan is on or off, the ECS10/E is able to detect other potential ventilation problems. These include faulty belts, incorrect motor rotation and gradual clogging of filters where although the fan may appear to be running, adequate air flow is not being produced. Three different range options are provided with the ECS10/E to accommodate most of the common sizes used for extraction fan motors without necessitating installation of different sensors for different applications. Additionally, because the sensor module can easily be removed and replaced in the field without having to physically disconnect any wires, this product provides a very convenient solution for maintenance personnel.
Key Features & Benefits
Green/Red LED Indication - Green = sufficient fan current (fan running), Red = insufficient current (fan stopped, failed or belt broken). Simple, clear status at a glance.
Three Selectable Ranges - R1: 0.1–1A; R2: 0.9–10A; R3: 9–20A - covers the majority of extraction fan motor sizes.
Set in Base — No Live Wire Exposure - Range selected within the base of the unit, which can be adjusted while the motor is running without exposure to live electrical connections.
Safe Start Check - Self-tested at every start-up - confirms correct sensor operation before gas supply is allowed.
Detects Belt Failures, Reversed Motors, Filter Blockage - More comprehensive fault detection than a simple on/off pressure switch.
Modular Plug-In Replacement - The sensor module plugs into the base - replacement without rewiring.
IP65 Protection - Suitable for commercial kitchen environments including hygiene wash-down operations.
CE Marked - Complies with low voltage directive and EMC emissions.
For Use with Caledonian EMX Series Panels - Works with EMX10 (single fan), EMX20/50 (dual fan). Also available combined: EMS10/EMS20 Combi.
Non-Indicating Version of ECS10 - ECS10 has LCD current display; ECS10/E has LED only. Lower cost where exact current readout is not required.
Ideal For
BS 6173 gas interlock systems using Caledonian EMX series control panels
Installations where a pressure differential switch is impractical (wall-mounted fans, low duct pressure differential)
Installations requiring detection of belt failures, reversed motors or filter blockage — not just on/off fan detection
Replacing a failed ECS10/E sensor in an existing Caledonian interlock system
