BS 6173 requires a gas proving system in any commercial kitchen where at least one appliance does not have a flame failure device. A plain gas interlock (such as the Banico ISP-3 or Caledonian EMX range) confirms that the extraction fan is running before allowing gas — but it does not test the gas system for leaks. A gas proving system adds a leak detection cycle: before gas is allowed to flow to appliances, the system pressurises the gas distribution pipework, holds the pressure for a set period, and confirms no pressure drop has occurred. Only when the integrity of the system has been confirmed does it allow gas to the appliances.
The GLT10 operates in several modes to accommodate different installation requirements, including the 'weep' system described in IGE document IM20 — this mode allows a controlled weep of gas past the proving valve to simulate normal gas consumption during the proving cycle, which is required for certain installation configurations. The GLT10 is available in standalone versions (with its own control panel) and systems integration versions (for use within a broader kitchen ventilation and interlock system). When Is a Gas Proving System Required?
BS 6173 requires gas proving when any appliance in the kitchen does not have a flame failure device (FFD). This applies most commonly to:
Small gas rings and traditional Chinese wok burners without FFD
Older grills and ovens not equipped with FFD
Any appliance where the gas tap can be left open without the burner being lit
A gas proving system tests the entire gas distribution system for leaks before each service, providing a higher level of safety than extraction interlock alone — and will also detect a gas tap that has been left open without ignition.
