Description

Gas Underground Detectable Marker Tape – 200mm × 100m | Dual Stainless Steel Tracers | "CAUTION BURIED GAS MAIN"

This is the detectable version of Hamilton Gas Products' underground marker tape. The key difference from the non-detectable 365m tape is two stainless steel wires embedded in the mesh, which allow a standard cable or pipe locator — the same type used to locate buried cables and pipes before excavation — to find and trace the tape from the surface, even after burial and even where original excavation records are lost or unavailable.

When contractors scan the ground before digging on a future project, the embedded wires signal the presence of a gas main below, before any excavation reaches the tape itself. It's printed with a continuous "CAUTION BURIED GAS MAIN" warning in black on yellow, and made from heavy-duty, rot-resistant polyethylene mesh designed to remain intact and detectable for the life of the buried installation.

At 200mm wide, it's wider than the non-detectable 365m version, giving a broader visible warning band in the trench once uncovered. The 100m roll length is shorter than the non-detectable tape — detectable tape carries a higher cost, so it's typically specified for the most critical runs where surface tracing capability justifies the extra expense. As with the non-detectable version, it should be laid approximately 300mm above the top of the pipe during backfill, per NJUG guidance.

Key Features & Benefits
  • Dual Stainless Steel Tracer Wires: Allow detection with standard cable and pipe locating equipment from the surface, before excavation begins.
  • Detectable Before Excavation: The tape, and the gas main below it, can be traced from the surface — useful where buried service records are unavailable or unreliable.
  • 200mm Width: Wider than the non-detectable version, giving a broader visible warning band when uncovered.
  • "CAUTION BURIED GAS MAIN" Continuous Warning: Printed in black on yellow along the full 100m length.
  • Heavy-Duty Rot-Resistant Polyethylene Mesh: Designed to remain intact and detectable for the life of the buried installation.
  • Yellow: The correct colour for gas main underground marking.
  • Laid Above the Pipe During Backfill: Installed approximately 300mm above the pipe per NJUG guidance.
Detectable vs Non-Detectable — Which Do I Need?
  • Non-Detectable (365m x 150mm): No embedded wire. Visual warning only when excavation reaches it. Lower cost, longer roll for large projects.
  • Detectable (this product — 100m x 200mm): Dual stainless steel wires, traceable from the surface before excavation. Wider tape, higher cost, typically specified for critical gas main routes, high-risk locations or where future detectability is required.
Installation Guidance
  • Lay during trench backfill, approximately 300mm above the top of the gas pipe.
  • Minimum depth below finished ground level approximately 450mm (NJUG guidance).
  • Lay flat across the full trench width, printed warning facing upward.
  • Continue the tape without breaks along the full length of the pipe run.
  • Do not cut or join within the trench, as interruptions reduce detectability.
Ideal For
  • Gas mains installation where surface tracing capability is specified or required.
  • High-risk locations, including road crossings, footway crossings and areas with complex buried utilities.
  • Utility companies and gas main contractors specifying detectable tape per project requirements.
  • Civil engineering and infrastructure projects requiring EN 12613 or equivalent compliant detectable tape.
Why Buy This Product?

The embedded stainless steel tracer wires give this tape a genuine advantage over the non-detectable version: it can be located from the surface before a spade or digger ever touches the ground, which matters on critical gas main routes or where excavation records are incomplete. Stainless steel resists corrosion over a long underground service life, and at 200mm wide it gives a broader visible band than the standard tape once uncovered. For road crossings, footway crossings and other high-risk locations, that added traceability can be the deciding factor over the lower-cost non-detectable option.
