Description

Anton IAQ8494 – A Professional Grade CO2 Meter - BS8494 Compliant CO2 Monitor | Stable NDIR Sensor

The Anton IAQ8494 is a handheld carbon dioxide (CO2) meter for indoor air quality assessment, ventilation testing and flueless gas appliance safety checks. It is not a carbon monoxide (CO) detector — CO2 build-up is a different indicator, showing when ventilation isn't adequately clearing exhaled or combustion gases from a space, which in turn confirms whether flueless appliances are operating safely.

It measures CO2 across a 0 to 9,999 ppm range with 2 ppm resolution using an NDIR (non-dispersive infrared) sensor, a technology chosen for its stability and long service life — the sensor has an anticipated lifespan of up to 15 years, considerably longer than typical electrochemical CO2 sensors. A maximum alarm threshold is set at 9,900 ppm, with the adjustable audible alarm able to be set lower to match the specific assessment.

The instrument records minimum and maximum CO2 levels during a session and calculates time-weighted averages, which is the format needed for occupational exposure assessments and compliance reporting. Fresh air correction allows the baseline calibration to be adjusted manually, and an RS232 interface allows measurement data to be transferred to a PC for analysis and record-keeping. Ambient temperature is also measured, from -10°C to +60°C with ±0.6°C accuracy.

It's BS8494 compliant across the 10-60°C range specified by the standard, and comes with a rugged blow-moulded carry case, DC mains adaptor and 4 x AA batteries.

Key Features & Benefits

Key Features and Benefits
  • BS8494 Compliant: Meets British Standard BS8494 for CO2 monitoring across the 10–60°C range, the correct documented instrument for professional IAQ assessments.
  • NDIR Sensor, 15-Year Anticipated Lifespan: Stable, accurate CO2 sensing technology built for long-term professional use.
  • 0–9,999 ppm CO2 Measurement Range: Covers ambient outdoor levels through to critically high indoor concentrations, with a maximum alarm threshold of 9,900 ppm.
  • Min/Max Recording: Records and displays the minimum and maximum CO2 levels detected during a session.
  • Time-Weighted Average Calculation: Calculates TWA CO2 levels for occupational exposure assessment and compliance reporting.
  • Adjustable Audible Alarm: Alerts when CO2 levels exceed a preset threshold.
  • Fresh Air Correction: Manual correction for accurate baseline calibration.
  • RS232 PC Interface: Transfers measurement data to a PC for analysis and record-keeping.
  • Temperature Measurement: -10°C to +60°C with ±0.6°C accuracy, alongside CO2 data.
  • Backlit Display: Readable in dark rooms and confined spaces.
  • Rugged Blow-Moulded Carry Case: Protects the instrument in transit and on site.
Ideal For
  • Flueless gas appliance safety checks (space heaters, water heaters and similar).
  • Indoor air quality monitoring and ventilation testing.
  • Domestic and commercial service engineers.
  • IAQ specialists and building services consultants.
  • Schools, offices and commercial building assessments.
  • Catering and hospitality environments.
  • Time-weighted average exposure assessments.
Why Buy the Anton IAQ8494?

BS8494 compliance makes this the right documented instrument for checking flueless gas appliances are operating safely, rather than relying on a general-purpose CO2 meter without that certification. The NDIR sensor's anticipated 15-year lifespan is considerably longer than typical electrochemical alternatives, making it a longer-term investment rather than an instrument that needs replacing every few years. Time-weighted average calculation gives the data format needed for occupational exposure and compliance reporting, and the RS232 interface allows records to be transferred directly to a PC rather than transcribed manually from the display.
